January Is Broken

24/1/2020

I'm looking forward to February for many reasons, but principally because January can do one. January is broken.

First it was my car's headlights. Bulbs busted, a cheap but faffy chore to get that fixed again. Then it was the iron. That stopped working early in the month, and no one wants wrinkled babygrows from my business NAVY FROG. That was a little more expensive but simply and quickly solved (thank you Amazon Prime). And today? Today the washing machine is playing silly buggers. Water, for no apparent reason, is not entering the machine.

I am sad enough to blog about my broken washing machine, yes I am. I love my washing machine. This is a kind of therapy for me! Hopefully it'll be a storm in a teacup and an easy, cheap fix - as we've only had the machine for four months - but stay with me on this.

I'm on maternity leave at the moment, taking care of a seven month old baby. It's hard work, but through the poo-splosions, the hungry (now toothy) breastfeeding, the colds and the multitude of people who offer unwanted advice, one thing I do really rely on is the washing machine... and it's stopped.

We use reusable wipes - basically small wet cloths and flannels instead of baby wipes.
My baby is a 'cloth bum', spending most of her time in reusable nappies.
There's now three humans and a dog in our house, which creates masses of clothes (humans) and dirty blankets/towels (dog).

These all need washing properly in a machine. Hand washing just doesn't cut it for any of those. Recently, I've even worked out how to 'handwash' the crocheted blankets in the machine. That machine is my God, basically.

And I love doing the laundry. It's the only household chore I (almost) relish. It's got everything. It's a routine which smells lovely when it's done. It's easy and makes me feel like I've achieved something by 9am if the cycle's done by then. It produces great results for no elbow grease. I don't have to go out to the shed for any parts (that's where we keep the vacuum). The work continues as I crack on with something else; be it dinner, feeding the baby, or walking the dog, the washing is in progress as I do it. The ultimate in multitasking.

I just stepped away from the laptop as my little one woke from a nap and I've completely forgotten which direction this blog was taking and what the point of it was. It seems my brain is a little broken too!

Roll on February!

I'm a writer based in South Wales, with an unhealthy obsession with stationery and baking. I mainly blog for my own sanity, but I'm also working on a novel. Still.
